The search for the best rugby helmet can be like starting a decathlon because the offer is so important: sizes, colors, technical specifications, standards, usefulness...
As many questions as you can ask yourself and which we will answer below:
Definition: what is a rugby helmet?
Lhe rugby helmet is personal protective equipment (PPE) which aims to protect the head from blows as the force of impact is lessened and distributed over a larger area.
IRB Rule 12 states that "A player is permitted to wear a helmet made of soft, thin materials provided that no part of the helmet is thicker than 1cm when the material is uncompressed and 'no part of the helmet has a density greater than 45 kilograms per cubic metre'
What types of rugby helmets?

Unlike other rugby PPE, the helmet is relatively similar from brand to brand. It always consists of a soft, usually dimpled shell with an opening for the ears. The helmet is attached in front by an adjustable strap by Velcro and behind by a drawstring allowing the helmet to be properly adjusted to your head.
There are no technical differences between men's and women's helmets.
The differences will therefore be in the size, design and also the flexibility of the helmet.
Does the rugby helmet really protect?
With all approved helmets on the market, your ears, your scalp and your forehead will be protected by a 1 cm high density foam.
An independent Anglo-Saxon study conducted on helmets from 7 different brands showed that the helmet could reduce impact force by up to 50%. All injuries are concerned: bleeding, lacerations, but also concussions.
The rugby helmet therefore aims to reduce the risk of concussions and really protects against injury.
The helmets must bear the mention 'IRB Approved', i.e. they meet the technical specifications of the International Rugby Federation and must also meet the European standard. Please note, rugby helmets sold on foreign sites are rarely compliant since they do not bear the CE mark. These two standards - CE & World Rugby - must appear both on the helmet packaging and on a label in the helmet.

– Can you wash a rugby helmet?
Yes, but it must be done in cold water so as not to alter the technical properties of the foam. Then do not put it in the dryer or dry it on a radiator.
– How to choose the correct rugby helmet size?
Take a seamstress (or equivalent) and measure around your head at the forehead. Afterwards, refer to the size correspondence of the different brands . If in doubt, take the size above because you can tighten the helmet with the chin strap and the lace at the back.
Please note that helmet sizes often have nothing to do with clothing sizes.
– What's the difference between entry-level and premium models?
The difference may be a little on the quality of the protection because the density of the foam is not necessarily equal from one model to another. But only in seniors because this difference will not play on lower impacts like at Rugby School.
Then the difference will be made on the comfort and the flexibility of the helmet.
– Is wearing a helmet compulsory in rugby?
To date, wearing a helmet is not compulsory in France. However, it is becoming more and more widespread and some rugby schools make it compulsory in the same way as theprotège-dents.
